Lent Day 37

April 1, 2015

Mark 14: 43-46 (NRSV): The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; and with him there was a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”45 So when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 Then they laid hands on him and arrested him.

“Judas, must you betray me with a kiss?”

Jesus sings that question to Judas in the movie, Jesus Christ Superstar. Why a kiss?

Have you ever thought about that? It kind of changes the meaning of a kiss. All of it was too much for Judas who went on to kill himself.

How much do we do with a smile or a kiss when we may have selfish motives? If we’re honest with ourselves, we may not be that much different from Judas.
If we recognize that, we can begin to change our ways. Of course, we can only do that with God’s help. He is there to help us.

We can begin, or begin again, today to stop our sinful ways. Thank you, God, for Your unlimited forgiveness, grace and loving help for us all. Amen.
